Listening to this CD is to me a very pleasant meeting with a young powerful orchestra.
The compositions are a colorful variety from Basie through standards to originals.
In “Lil’ Ol’ Grovvemaker” the band is very tight, followed by Rob Pronk’s beautiful composition “Fred my pal”.
Don’t miss Johan Vermuyens exciting tenorsolo in “Just for fun”. By the way, throughout the whole CD you will enjoy the many good soloists in this band.
Ferdinand Povel is one of the great world-class reed players and for the one who have doubts about that just listen to his “I should care”.
A typical Bill Holman piece finds everybody “Larin-swinging” in “Sometimes a Samba”.
Coming next to the suite by bandleader Joan Reinders. I admire his cluster sounds, the contrasts and the freshness in his writing.
I think if Joan keeps developing his composing and his orchestra the Big Barchem band will have future. Just keep working at it very hard, as much as you all cab give!
